Work out what each line is worth
Count the lines between two numbered marks and divide. On most 0.3 mL and 0.5 mL syringes each line is one unit. On a 1 mL syringe each line is often two units, so the mark between 20 and 30 is 25, not a single unit. Half-unit syringes step in 0.5-unit lines.

Read at the flat stopper edge
The rubber stopper has a flat front face toward the needle and a coned back. Line up the flat front face, the one facing the medication, with your unit line. Reading from the pointed tip instead overstates the dose.

Clear air bubbles before reading
Tap the barrel so bubbles rise to the needle and push them back into the vial. A bubble in the barrel takes up space a unit of medication should fill, so the number you read would fall short.

Check against the number
