Is a lump normal after an injection?+

A small, soft lump right after a subcutaneous injection is described in the literature as a common fluid depot and is usually harmless. A firm lump that keeps returning to the same site may instead be lipohypertrophy, and a red, hot, painful lump is a red flag.

How long does a lump last after injection?+

A soft depot usually flattens over minutes to hours, per patient-education references. Tissue thickened by lipohypertrophy, by contrast, needs weeks to months of rest from the site to resolve, per the FIT recommendations. A growing, painful lump should be checked by a clinician.

What causes hard lumps at injection sites?+

Can I inject into a lump?+

No. The FIT recommendations describe avoiding thickened or scarred areas, because absorption there is unpredictable and more lumps can form. Choose a clear patch of skin according to your rotation plan.

When should I see a doctor about a lump?+

Published nursing references and the IDSA guideline name spreading redness, warmth, severe or worsening pain, fever, or pus as reasons to contact your prescriber, as these can signal infection. A firm lump that does not resolve over weeks is also worth reviewing.
